Young Leaders in Service Program
Leadership begins with opportunity, encouragement, and a chance to step forward and that is exactly what this program provides.
The Mareeba Lions Young Leaders In Service were awarded the 2026 Junior Community Service Award at the Mareeba Shire Australia Day Awards.
Real Experience. Real Impact.
Young Leaders work alongside the Mareeba Lions on real projects that make a real difference in our community. Participants gain hands-on experience by:
- Helping plan and deliver community events
- Supporting local initiatives and service projects
- Developing public speaking and communication skills
- Problem-solving, collaborating and working as part of a team
- Stepping into responsibility and leadership roles
They learn that leadership isn’t about being the loudest voice leadership is service, teamwork, and showing up for your community.
Program Structure & Commitment
The program runs for 12 months (July to June) and is open to motivated students who are willing to commit to personal growth and community service.
Participants are required to:
- Attend a minimum of 8 meetings of the Mareeba Lions Club
- Participate in and represent the Mareeba Lions at a minimum of 6 community events
- Complete 30 volunteer hours with the Lions Club of Mareeba
What the Program Provides
Mentorship & Guidance
Members of the Lions Club of Mareeba bring a wealth of life experience, professional skills and community knowledge. They mentor and support our Young Leaders to ensure they gain maximum benefit from the program.
Service Activities
Young Leaders engage in a wide range of local service projects, which may include:
- Environmental clean-ups
- Community markets and events
- Fundraising initiatives
- Practical service projects that support the local community
And yes we believe volunteering should be meaningful and fun.
Recognition & Support
Each participant will receive:
- A Young Leaders in Service shirt and name badge
- A Young Leaders in Service Certificate upon completion
- A written reference from the Lions Club of Mareeba
- A small bursary to support further study or trade training
How to Apply
The Young Leaders in Service Program is open to motivated students who are keen to make a difference in their community and develop leadership skills through hands-on service.
Eligibility:
- Students in Year 10 or Year 11
- Aged 15–16 years
- All academic levels and backgrounds are welcome
- An interest in community service, leadership and teamwork
Application Process:
Each participant will be required to:
- Complete an Application Form
Interested students are invited to complete the Young Leaders in Service application form, outlining their interests, strengths and reasons for wanting to participate in the program. - Submit a Short Statement of Interest
Applicants will be asked to share why they would like to join the program and how they hope to contribute to the community. - Parent / Guardian Consent
As this is a youth program, parent or guardian consent is required. - Informal Interview
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an informal interview with members of the Lions Club of Mareeba. This is a relaxed conversation to get to know the student, answer questions and ensure the program is the right fit. - Program Commencement
Successful applicants will be notified prior to the July commencement and invited to attend an induction session with the Lions Club of Mareeba.
